Unemployment falls across most of Georgia’s regional commissions in July

The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that unemployment fell in most of Georgia’s 12 regional commissions in July.

“Our greatest strength is our people and the businesses that call Georgia home,” said Labor Commissioner Bárbara Rivera Holmes. “July’s unemployment numbers show progress across most metro areas, and even where there are slight upticks, year-over-year trends reflect our resilience. By investing in our workforce and supporting a strong environment for business, Georgia will continue to win and drive economic growth for all Georgians.”

Coffee and Atkinson counties are in the Southern Georgia Regional Commission. Please see a synopsis of each regional commission below:

Atlanta Regional Commission

  • The unemployment rate was down one-tenth to 3.5% over-the-month. The rate was 3.8% one year ago.
  • The labor force was down 2,139 over-the-month and down 18,446 over-the-year, to 2,708,914.
  • The number of employed was up 776 over-the-month and down 10,273 over-the-year, to 2,614,663.
  • Initial claims were up 365 over-the-month and down 1,033 over-the-year, to 10,250.

Central Savannah River

  • The unemployment rate remained unchanged posting at 4.4% over-the-month. The rate was 4.9% one year ago.
  • The labor force was down 1,478 over-the-month and down 3,442 over-the-year, to 206,982.
  • The number of employed was down 1,406 over-the-month and down 2,041 over-the-year, to 197,977.
  • Initial claims were up 229 over-the-month and down 397 over-the-year, to 1,246.

Coastal Georgia

  • The unemployment rate was down one-tenth to 3.3% over-the-month. The rate was 3.6% one year ago.
  • The labor force was down 1,163 over-the-month and down 3,390 over-the-year, to 354,659.
  • The number of employed was down 736 over-the-month and down 2,243 over-the-year, to 342,845.
  • Initial claims were up 267 over-the-month and up 59 over-the-year, to 1,172.

Georgia Mountains

  • The unemployment rate was down one-tenth to 3.2% over-the-month. The rate was 3.6% one year ago.
  • The labor force was down 156 over-the-month and down 1,570 over-the-year, to 242,308.
  • The number of employed was up 80 over-the-month and down 733 over-the-year, to 234,458.
  • Initial claims were up 69 over-the-month, and down 101 over-the-year, to 730. 

Heart of Georgia

  • The unemployment rate was up one-tenth to 4.4% over-the-month. The rate was 4.7% one year ago.
  • The labor force was up 11 over-the-month and down 1,833 over-the-year, to 115,316.
  • The number of employed was down 93 over-the-month and down 1,383 over-the-year, to 110,292.
  • Initial claims were up 519 over-the-month, and up 391 over-the-year, to 1,089.

Middle Georgia

  • The unemployment rate was down one-tenth to 3.8% over-the-month. The rate was 4.2% one year ago.
  • The labor force was up 390 over-the-month and down 375 over-the-year, to 222,715.
  • The number of employed was up 665 over-the-month and up 590 over-the-year, to 214,242.
  • Initial claims were up 31 over-the-month and down 221 over-the-year, to 813.

Northeast Georgia

  • The unemployment rate was down one-tenth to 3.5% over-the-month. The rate was 3.8% one year ago.
  • The labor force was up 103 over-the-month and down 162 over-the-year, to 348,004.
  • The number of employed was up 508 over-the-month and up 1,056 over-the-year, to 335,944.
  • Initial claims up 52 over-the-month and down 363 over-the-year, to 957.

Northwest Georgia

  • The unemployment rate was up four-tenths to 3.8% over-the-month. The rate was 3.8% one year ago.
  • The labor force was up 2,094 over-the-month and up 480 over-the-year, to 457,633.
  • The number of employed was up 336 over-the-month and up 450 over-the-year, to 440,170.
  • Initial claims up 2,287 over-the-month and up 1,039 over-the-year, to 4,152.

River Valley

  • The unemployment rate was down one-tenth to 4.3% over-the-month. The rate was 4.6% one year ago.
  • The labor force was down 111 over-the-month and down 2,008 over-the-year, to 143,620.
  • The number of employed was up 37 over-the-month and down 1,483 over-the-year, to 137,453.
  • Initial claims were up 106 over-the-month and down 93 over-the-year, to 756.

Southern Georgia

  • The unemployment rate was up one-tenth to 4.1% over-the-month. The rate was 4.3% one year ago.
  • The labor force was down 328 over-the-month and down 3,358 over-the-year, to 171,927.
  • The number of employed was down 557 over-the-month and down 2,872 over-the-year, to 164,795.
  • Initial claims were up 645 over-the-month and down 155 over-the-year, to 1,221.

Southwest Georgia

  • The unemployment rate was down two-tenths to 4.0% over-the-month. The rate was 4.2% one year ago.
  • The labor force was down 229 over-the-month and down 4,135 over-the-year, to 144,264.
  • The number of employed was up 14 over-the-month and down 3,625 over-the-year, to 138,469.
  • Initial claims were up 67 over-the-month and down 207 over-the-year, to 558.

Three Rivers

  • The unemployment rate was down one-tenth to 3.5% over-the-month. The rate was 3.8% one year ago.
  • The labor force was up 280 over-the-month and down 1,344 over-the-year, to 269,182.
  • The number of employed was up 352 over-the-month and down 513 over-the-year, to 259,669.
  • Initial claims were up 403 over-the-month and down 400 over-the-year, to 1,488.
