The Coffee Lady Trojans split a doubleheader with the Veterans Warhawks Thursday afternoon at Faircloth Field in Douglas. Veterans took game one 6-3 then Coffee bounced back in the nightcap with a 9-1 win via five-inning run rule.
In game one, the Warhawks were up 5-0 after 2 1/2 innings before the Lady Trojans got on the board. Ella Edge hit a two-out double to left that scored Karlee Thomas from first. Veterans scored again in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. Coffee scored two more in the bottom of the seventh when Edge drove in Jocelyn Fender on a single and Kanlee Douglas followed with a fielder’s choice that scored Thomas.
Thomas was 3-3 with two runs scored. Edge and RiRi Paulk also had a pair of hits. Edge drove in two as well. Douglas went the distance for the Lady Trojans. She gave up six runs on nine hits with one strikeout and one walk. Only one of Veterans’ runs was earned thanks to four Coffee errors.
Game two was a different story. Coffee jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first and built on that advantage from there. The Lady Trojans scored three in the third, three in the fourth, and two in the fifth. The Warhawks managed just one in the third.
Edge and Ella Winters both homered – Winters in the third and Edge in the fourth. Douglas was 3-3 with a run and an RBI. Winters, Edge, Paulk, and Brylee Gamage had two hits. Thomas, Winters, and Edge drove in two and scored two.
Maggie Brown was back in the circle and she kept the Warhawks in check all night. She struck out seven, walked one, and gave up one earned run on six hits.
Coffee is 4-3 overall and 1-2 in region play. Houston County comes to Faircloth Field Tuesday for a 4 p.m. matchup. Thursday, the Lady Trojans will travel to Houston for a doubleheader.
