Ella Edge homered and Maggie Brown added 12 more strikeouts (giving her 31 for the week in two outings) in the Coffee Lady Trojans 7-2 win over the Pierce County Bears this week. The Lady Trojans are 10-4 on the season and 3-0 for the week in non-region competition. They resume region play next week.
Coffee’s offense gave Brown some run support but they waited until the last inning to do so. Pierce took a 1-0 lead in the second. The Lady Trojans responded with two in the third to go up 2-1. Allie Pridgen drove in Coffee’s first run with a bases-loaded walk. Next, RiRi Paulk was hit by a pitch, driving in another run. The Bears scored in the sixth to tie the game at two apiece.
Then the Lady Trojans broke the game wide open in the seventh. Ella Winters led off with a double. A Karlee Thomas double scored Winters. Kanlee Douglas singled, scoring Thomas and giving Coffee a 4-2 lead. Edge followed with her second home run of the season, a two-run shot to right that also scored Douglas. A couple of batters later with Brown at the plate, Pridgen stole third then scored on a wild pitch to put the Lady Trojans up 7-2. The rally ended there and Coffee held Pierce scoreless in the bottom of the inning.
Winters and Thomas both had two hits and two runs scored. Edge was 1-3 with a two-run home run.
Brown went the distance, allowing just one earned run on three hits with 12 strikeouts and no walks.
The Lady Trojans play the Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Faircloth Field. Thursday, they travel to Thomas County for a doubleheader.
