The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) of Douglas proudly presented a $10,000 Facade Improvement Grant to Delorice’s Florist, owned by Dawson and Kara Adams. The presentation took place this week with DDA board members and staff celebrating the completion of the business’ extensive renovation project at their new location, 108 N. Peterson Avenue.
Delorice’s Florist was selected for the grant in March following a competitive application process. The Facade Improvement Grant Program provides a matching grant covering 50% of project costs up to $10,000, designed to assist property owners and businesses in revitalizing and preserving the historic character of Downtown Douglas.
The Adamses purchased Delorice’s Florist near the end of 2023, opening the business in downtown Douglas in January of 2024. After looking for a forever home for Delorice’s Florist earlier this year, they found the perfect spot just one block away in beautiful downtown: a two-story shop rich with character. The first floor has been transformed into the new home of Delorice’s Florist, while the second floor will house Dawson Adams Photography.
In an effort to restore the 125-year-old property, crumbling brick has been repaired, missing shutters replaced, a beautiful tile entry has been restored, transom windows have been revealed, and the building has been painted a beautiful shade of blue: reminiscent of a previous state of the building many years ago. The icing on the cake: a gorgeous sign displayed above the door with the name “Delorice’s Florist.”
“This project reflects the very heart of our Facade Improvement Grant Program – investing in our historic downtown while supporting entrepreneurs who are committed to our community,” said Jeff Hennesy, DDA Chairman.
The DDA presented the Adams family with a ceremonial check to commemorate the $10,000 award. Board members present included Jeff Hennesy (Chairman), Brian Norris (Vice Chairman), Joy Vickers (Secretary/Treasurer), Scott Moore, Dalton King, Liz Grantham, and Megan Rabun (Executive Director). Michael Newton serves on the board but was not present for the photo.
The Facade Improvement Grant Program is made possible through generous community sponsorships. The Community Foundation of Coffee County serves as the Platinum Sponsor, with Optima Chemical and Southwire as Gold Sponsors.
