The CCA Lady Patriots are the GIAA Class A/AA District 6 champions after defeating the David Emanuel Academy Eagles 6-1 Thursday in Stillmore. Tuesday, the Lady Patriots squeaked one out at home against the Robert Toombs Christian Academy Lady Crusaders 5-4.
In Thursday’s championship game, CCA staked its claim in the first inning with four runs. With one out, Cadence Cravey walked. Emma Gourley followed with single that moved Cravey to third. Gourley stole second, putting both runners in scoring position. Mattie Lewis reached on an error that scored Cravey and moved Gourley to third. Abrah Harris was hit by a pitch to load the bases, still with just one out. Gracie Giddens came up big with a single that scored Gourley and pinch runner Lily Waldron. Klair Mercer scored Harris on a groundout to put the Lady Patriots up 4-0.
In the top of the fourth, CCA scored two more when Gourley flew out to center. Arrabelle Roberts and Cravey were both on base and were able to score after tagging up. The two runs gave the Lady Patriots a 6-0 advantage.
The Eagles managed a run in the bottom of the sixth but that’s as close as they would get. CCA cruised to a 6-1 win and a second consecutive district championship.
Giddens and Gourley had two hits each. Giddens also scored twice. Lewis’s double was the only extra-base hit for the Lady Patriots.
The duo of Peighton Harper and Giddens kept the Eagles in check on the circle. Harper took the win with five scoreless innings of work. She gave up three hits while striking out six and walking two. Giddens went the final two innings. She allowed one earned run on two hits.
Tuesday, the Crusaders gave the Lady Patriots a scare at home. CCA jumped out to a 5-2 lead then Robert Toombs battled back, scoring one in the fifth and one in the sixth to get within one. The Crusaders had a runner on second with two outs but Harper, who came in during the sixth inning, induced a strikeout to end the inning with the lead intact.
Brilynn Waldron and Giddens had two hits. Cravey drove in two. Giddens and Harper handled the pitching duties again; this time, Giddens started and Harper relieved her after five innings.
The Lady Patriots have three more regular season games left. They have a doubleheader on Tuesday at home against First Preparatory Christian Academy beginning at 4 p.m. They finish the season Thursday at Southwest Georgia Academy. CCA is 19-4 on the season.
