The Coffee High Lady Trojans’ season came to an end Monday afternoon at the hands of the defending 5A state champion Creekview Grizzlies in the first round of the state playoffs in Canton. The two teams opened the postseason with a doubleheader; the Grizzlies won both games by scores of 8-0 and 18-0.

In game one, Creekview scored in every inning but one. The got on the board with a run in the first, three in the second, three in the third, and one in the fifth. The Lady Trojans, on the other hand, just couldn’t get any offense going. Creekview pitcher Jesse Roland, last year’s 5A Pitcher of the Year, gave up just one hit — a single to Kanlee Douglas.

Maggie Brown took the loss with 3 1/3 innings of work. She struck out two and walked two. Douglas went 1 1/3 innings, striking out one and walking one.

Things didn’t get any better in game two. The Grizzlies started off a little slow, scoring two in the first and two in the third. Then they broke the game wide open with a 14-run fourth inning kicked in the
four-inning run rule. Jaidyn Griffith wasn’t much easier to hit than Roland had been in game one. Two Lady Trojans — Ella Edge and Ella Winters — singled. Winters, Brown, and Allie Pridgen walked.

Coffee used three pitchers in the game — Brown, Karlee Thomas, and Douglas, in that order.

“I’m proud of the way our girls competed all year long. It didn’t end the way we wanted it to but I feel like we accomplished some significant milestones this season. We were one of the best teams in our region and
that says a lot about the character, the work ethic, and the talent this team has. We have a talented group of really good players coming up. The seniors really set great examples of what it takes to be successful and they’re leaving this program in excellent shape. We’re going to learn from this and use it as motivation to work harder and get better. Coffee High softball is in a really good position moving forward and this program has a bright future ahead,” said head coach Katy Lott.

The Lady Trojans finish the season with a 20-9 record and a share of the Region 2-5A championship.
