Nicholls mayor holds on to one-vote lead, Taylor re-elected to city commission seat, voters approve countywide Sunday alcohol sales

Nicholls Mayor Tamon Frost is holding on to a one-vote lead over challenger Ronnie Burch, Nicholls will have a few new city council members, incumbent Douglas Ward 1 city commissioner Edwin Taylor won another term, and Sunday alcohol sales has spread to the county, according to the unofficial results from Tuesday’s election.

On the ballot were two statewide Public Service Commission races as well as municipal elections in Ambrose, Douglas, and Nicholls. There were also two local referendums related to Sunday alcohol sales put before the voters.

Here are the local results for the major races:

Public Service Commission District 2: Incumbent Republican Tim Echols defeated Alicia M. Johnson 1,579-1,362.

Public Service Commission District 3: Incumbent Republican Fitz Johnson defeated Peter Hubbard 1,616 to 1,319.

Statewide, those results flipped; Johnson and Hubbard both pulled off upsets and ousted their Republican opponents to win those two seats.

Douglas City Commissioner Ward 1: Incumbent Edwin Taylor defeated Sheila Carter Bivens 156-129

Nicholls City Council (top five): Darrick Bonaparte (163), Gloria Davis (138), Glynn Tanner (incumbent, 136), Beverly Holton (incumbent, 133), and Phillip Grady (incumbent, 131).

Nicholls Mayor: Incumbent Mayor Tamon Frost defeated Ronnie Burch 159-158.

Sunday alcohol sales referendum: Package sales  — 1,732 yes to 1,254 no. By the drink sales – 1,713 yes to 1,295 no.

In Pearson, Jason Joyner is the new mayor, defeating Jose Carlos Mejia 214-139. In the only contested Pearson City Council race, Wade Carver defeated Shonna Mitchem 219-110. Jason Joyner’s brother, Michael “Coolie” Joyner, ran unopposed for a city council seat.
