South Georgia State College (SGSC) recently celebrated a season of achievement, welcoming University System of Georgia (USG) Chancellor Sonny Perdue to its Douglas Campus and marking several historic milestones including a perfect accreditation review and the success of its first-ever comprehensive campaign, all underscoring the college’s impact across South Georgia.
During his visit, Chancellor Perdue met with SGSC Interim President Dr. Greg Tanner, faculty, staff, students, and community leaders to discuss the college’s mission and contributions to higher education and workforce development in the region. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the college, local schools, and community partners, noting that the state continues to invest in SGSC and its future. Chancellor Perdue encouraged everyone to work together to promote the value of a South Georgia State College education and to help more local students take advantage of the opportunities available close to home.
Also in attendance were Regents Patrick Jones and Tom Bradbury, who share a deep commitment to advancing higher education opportunities across South Georgia and within the University System of Georgia.
Chancellor Perdue’s visit came just days after SGSC achieved a major academic milestone. In mid-October, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) On-Site Reaffirmation Committee visited SGSC’s Douglas, Waycross, and Valdosta locations to verify compliance with accreditation standards.
The committee found SGSC in full compliance with all standards, marking a significant achievement in the college’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence and continuous improvement.
“This is an incredible milestone for South Georgia State College,” said Dr. Tanner. “To be found in full compliance across every standard is a testament to the dedication of our faculty, staff, and students. It confirms that the quality of education we provide meets the highest national standards and reflects the heart and excellence of our institution.”
The SACSCOC Board of Trustees is expected to take final action on SGSC’s reaffirmation in June 2026. Accreditation ensures eligibility for federal financial aid, transferability of credits, and public accountability for educational quality.
Adding to the college’s accomplishments, SGSC also celebrated the success of its first-ever comprehensive fundraising campaign, “The Heart of South Georgia,” launched in March 2024 to support student scholarships and enhance the overall student experience both inside and outside the classroom.
The campaign set an ambitious goal of raising $2 million by fall 2025 to expand academic programs, strengthen athletics, and invest in student-centered initiatives. SGSC announced a final total of over $2.1 million at the celebration event in Waycross in early October.
“Despite the challenges of Hurricane Helene and the rare snowstorm that blanketed southeast Georgia, the hearts of our communities never stopped beating,” said Dr. Tanner. “Donors across the region, state, and country blessed our students with resources to help them succeed at SGSC and prepare to soar into their future careers. The Heart of South Georgia campaign reflects the spirit and generosity that define this college and the people we serve.”
As SGSC continues to grow, the college is expanding its academic offerings designed to meet regional workforce needs. With over 20 associate pathways and five bachelor’s degrees in Biological Sciences, Elementary and Special Education, Management, Mechanical Engineering Technology, and Nursing, SGSC remains a leader in accessible, high-quality education for our area.
“SGSC’s accomplishments are a reflection of the strength of our people and our partnerships,” said Dr. Tanner. “From our recent accreditation success and the generosity shown through the Heart of South Georgia campaign to Chancellor Perdue’s visit, these milestones reflect our shared commitment to serve, educate, and make a lasting impact across South Georgia.”
