Douglas Rotary Club recognized several of its members who served in the U.S. military at the club’s November 13, 2025 meeting celebrating Veterans Day. Rotarians and guests then heard about the fascinating career of Army Colonel Donnie Courson.
Col. Courson grew up in Coffee County and graduated as class president of West Green High School in 1955. He served with distinction in the U.S. Army in Vietnam during some of the most pivotal times in the nation’s history. As a master aviator and parachutist, he was consulted by senior officers on the best use of helicopters in combat. His valor as a soldier and his successful missions the following years earned him the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross (five times), Bronze Star, and Meritorious Service Medal (five times). Following a memorable stint at South Georgia College, Col. Courson earned two bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history and human relations. In retirement he continued to fulfill key Veterans Affairs and community development efforts. Many locals have encountered his work in the Cattlemen’s Association, Farm Bureau, and other community organizations. He retired in Coffee County after seeing much of the world and continues being an example of service to many.
Douglas Rotarians present who were recognized for their military service
