Thirty years ago, both the CCA Lady Patriots and the CCA Patriots played for their respective state championships. It was the first time that had happened – and it was the last time.
Until this year.
Friday, both teams will take the court again with state titles on the line. After the Lady Patriots defeated Robert Toombs in double overtime, the Patriots defeated LaGrange 83-56 and advanced to the state finals Friday in Columbus.
It was a close game through three periods, with CCA leading LaGrange 48-46 late in the third quarter. The Patriots found their offense in the fourth quarter and went on a 35-10 run to close out the game for a 27-point win. Blake Bryant finished with 25 points followed by Thomas Gentry with 22, and Gray McLean with 17.
So what happened 30 years ago? The girls won their state title while the boys did not. Hopefully, both will win on Friday in Columbus.
