Thomas Gentry and Clay Phillips combined for a one-run two-hitter in the CCA Patriots’ 3-1 win against the Pinewood Christian Academy Patriots Tuesday night in Bellville.
Gentry threw 52 pitches over three innings, giving up one unearned run on no hits. He struck out four and walked two. Both teams scored a run in the first; when Gentry left the game after the third, the score was still tied. CCA scored a pair of runs in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead with Phillips on the mound. He grabbed the win with a two-hit, six-strikeout performance.
In the first, Gray McLean led off with a single. He advanced to second on a groundout by Gentry. Then he stole third and scored on a Blake Bryant sacrifice fly.
In the fifth, Landon Williams started things off with a single then scored on a one-out Jonah Hall single. McLean followed with a single that moved Hall to third. Gentry scored Hall on a sacrifice fly to left to stake a 3-1 CCA lead that would hold for the rest of the game.
McLean was 2-2 with a run. Jackson Knight doubled for the only CCA extra-base hit.
CCA is 10-1 overall and remains 3-0 in region competition. The Patriots travel to Atlanta later this week for a game against the Therrell High School Panthers, a GHSA 2A program, at Truist Park. Next week is Spring Break and the Patriots will make what is turning into an annual trip to Florida for three games at the Tampa Bay Rays spring training complex. They resume region play at home on Monday, April 13, against Vidalia Heritage Academy.
