CCA Patriot pitchers had a pretty good go of it this week. There was Blake Bryant’s previously-covered 18-strikeout performance on Tuesday against the Robert Toombs Christian Academy Crusaders. Then, on Thursday, Thomas Gentry, who started game one of a doubleheader against Robert Toombs at Patriot Field in Douglas, and reliever Sam Ables had impressive outings in their own right.
Gentry and Ables combined for a five-inning no hitter as the Patriots took game one 10-0. Gentry also led the CCA offense, going 2-4 with a game-ending home run, a triple, three RBI, and a run scored. The Patriots were up 8-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Gentry homered on a 3-1 pitch with Gray McLean on second. The home run put CCA up by 10 and ended the game via run rule.
Gentry also went four innings, striking out 11 and walking six. Ables threw the final inning; the lefty struck out two Crusaders and walked one.
McLean was 2-2 with three runs. Jackson Knight, Mason Spivey, Clay Phillips, and Bryant also had hits for the Patriots. Phillips drove in two as well.
Game two was more of the same. CCA won 12-1 and scored in every inning to again invoke the five-inning run rule. Skyler Woods, Jonah Hall, and Gentry had two hits. McLean, Hall, and Woods each doubled. Spivey tripled.
CCA head coach Jeremy Coram used three pitchers in the second game: McLean (win, 3IP, 3H, 1ER, 4K), Woods (1IP, 1BB, 2K), and Spivey (1IP, 2K).
Thursday’s games bring the region schedule to an end. The Patriots finished with a perfect 9-0 mark and are 22-1 overall with four non-region games remaining. Of those four, only one is at home – a Friday, May 1, showdown with Deerfield-Windsor at 6 p.m.
