The Martin Theatre Preservation Company, Inc., the nonprofit organization stewarding The Martin Theatre in downtown Douglas, is pleased to announce the appointment of Devis Burnam as its new Executive Director.
This appointment marks a significant milestone in the organization’s history. As The Martin Theatre continues to expand its role as a performing arts venue and community gathering space, Burnam becomes the organization’s first full-time executive leader. She will work closely with the Board of Directors to oversee daily operations, strengthen community engagement, guide programming, and support long-term sustainability.
Since reopening, The Martin Theatre has been sustained by a community of supporters who believe in the power of arts, culture, and historic preservation in Douglas and Coffee County. Burnam’s appointment reflects a continued commitment to building a strong and sustainable future while deepening the theatre’s role as a cultural home for the region.
“The Martin Theatre represents so much more than a venue,” said Burnam. “It is a place where history, creativity, and community come together. I’m honored to step into this role and serve an organization that means so much to Douglas and Coffee County. I look forward to working alongside the Board, our supporters, and the community to help steward this next chapter with care, vision, and purpose.”
The Martin Theatre, a restored venue in downtown Douglas, hosts a wide range of programming including live performances, community events, school activities, recitals, and private rentals. In addition to providing arts and cultural experiences, the theatre contributes to downtown activity, strengthens community connection, and supports the broader economic and civic life of the area.
As Executive Director, Burnam will lead day-to-day operations while working to expand programming, strengthen partnerships, support fundraising efforts, enhance communications, and implement systems that position The Martin Theatre for long-term growth. As the organization’s sole full-time employee, the role represents both a leadership opportunity and a strategic investment in the theatre’s future.
“This is an important moment for our organization,” said Robb Hurst, co-founder of The Martin Centre Preservation Company. “Hiring our first Executive Director reflects both how far The Martin Theatre has come and where we believe it can go.”
“We are excited to welcome Devis Burnam into this role,” added Brian Norris, co-founder. “We look forward to the leadership, energy, and community-minded vision she will bring as we continue building on the foundation that so many people have helped create.”
The Board of Directors views this transition as a key step in strengthening the theatre’s organizational capacity and expanding its impact. With professional leadership now in place, the nonprofit is positioned to build on the momentum created by volunteers, supporters, artists, and community partners who have helped sustain The Martin Theatre over the years.
