An armed standoff in Telfair County over the weekend ended with the suspect dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Telfair County Sheriff Sim Davidson.
On a post made to the sheriff’s office’s Facebook page, Sheriff Davidson provided details of the incident. Early in the afternoon of Sunday, May 24, 2026, deputies responded to a call in reference to threats made to an individual by another person. The deputies spoke with the complainant then went to the suspect’s location, which was on Studstill Road near Temperance Road in southwestern Telfair County.
When the deputies arrived at the location, Sheriff Davidson’s post says that “they were immediately met with gunfire.” The officers retreated and called for assistance. The Georgia State Patrol SWAT team and agents from the GBI responded as well and took over the scene. Officers spoke with the suspect and tried to negotiate with the shooter in an attempt to get him to surrender.
When those efforts failed, officers entered the residence and found the suspect, whose identity has not been released, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He later died as a result of his injuries.
Sheriff Davidson wrote: “I want to first thank God for protecting my deputies and other first responders throughout this dangerous and tense situation. This incident could have had a far worse outcome. I pray diligently for my staff day in and day out, and our Lord hears those prayers. I also want to thank all the agencies who responded to our call for help. There are simply too many to name in this post. I want to thank our 911 dispatchers for being our lifeline on this call. A special thank you goes out to the members of Rockwell Baptist Church who graciously opened their doors and allowed us to set up an incident command post on their campus. Also a special thanks to Telfair County Commissioners Purvis and Cravey who showed up to provide support as well as provide a meal for responders. Our fire, road, and EMS departments also showed up in force to help us as well. Thanks to all of our supporters who stood in the gap and prayed for us during this incident. Again, God heard these prayers and put a hedge of protection around all of us. And finally, thanks to those who reached out to offer equipment or other support during this incident. Again, too many to list. Please continue to pray for all of our first responders as they perform a dangerous or sometimes deadly job and put their lives on the line daily for us. We would covet those prayers.”
Sheriff Davidson continued: “There truly is no such thing as a ‘routine’ call. Deputies frequently respond to similar calls as this with no further concerns or response. You never know when ‘that’ call is going to come in. We train for such incidents as this, but you can never fully be prepared until it truly happens in real time. I commend each responder who worked this incident for being professional, patient, and proficient in your actions.”
