It’s a shame when a business uses its resources to help employees get to work only to have employees abuse that generosity. Allegedly, of course.
Last month, a local business fired two employees and had one arrested for allegedly using a company gas card and charge accounts for their personal gain, according to a report from the sheriff’s office. The report states that Michael Walls, 34, of Garfield, and his stepson, Brandon Camp, 19, of Jacksonville, Ga., both worked for a local contractor and rode to work together.
Walls was given a gas card to use in order to get to and from work. Camp was not given a card, the report says. According to the report, Camp told Walls that the owner of the company had said that Camp could use the card. That, however, was not the case.
The company began noticing that the gas bill for Walls’s vehicle was getting higher and higher each month. They pulled camera footage from the gas pumps and saw that Camp was using the card, the report says. The company also had problems with Camp charging personal items to business charge accounts and had him sign a paper stating that he could not do that, the report says. They had also taken $80 out of Camp’s check for a knife he allegedly charged but office staff noticed that he had been charging items again.
Management also learned that Camp was advertising gas for sale in cans. They suspect that Camp was charging the gas to the company then selling it, the report says. In total, the company believes that Camp had charged $3,927.55 in gas, $511.84 in tires, and other items at a local parts store. The report says that neither man works for the company now and Camp was arrested. He was charged with theft by receiving stolen property and financial transaction card fraud. He was booked into the Coffee County Jail on June 26, 2026, and released on a $5,500 property bond for each charge.
