A 31-year-old was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident and obstruction after he allegedly abandoned his vehicle on Highway 158 West when he ran off the road and got stuck.
According to a report from the sheriff’s office, on June 20, 2026, a deputy responded to an accident call on Highway 158 West at mile marker 8. When the officer arrived, he found a white Ford pickup on the side of the road. The truck was abandoned, the passenger’s side window was down, and the hazard lights were on. The report says the truck was stuck in the mud.
The owner of the truck was identified as Jesse Wayne Jewell, 31, of Douglas. The deputy attempted to contact Jewell, the report says, but he was unable to. The officer had the vehicle towed from the side of the road.
Later in the day, Jewell contacted the deputy and asked about the truck. Jewell said that he had hydroplaned and run off the road. The officer told Jewell that the truck had been towed. He was also told that the incident was considered an accident. As such, Jewell would be arrested and charged.
The report also says that Jewell spoke to another deputy and said towing the vehicle was government overreach.
Jewell was booked into the Coffee County Jail on June 30, 2026 on leaving the scene of an accident and obstruction (two counts). He was later released on bond.
