Mr. James “Dewey” Scott, Jr., age 86, of Douglas, Georgia, passed away peacefully at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.
Dewey was born September 18, 1939, in McRae, Georgia, to the late James Dewey Scott, Sr. and the late Audrey Towns Scott. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army Reserve, and he retired from CSX Railroad following many years as a supervisor. He was a devoted husband to Mrs. Othell Cliett Scott for 64 years and together they raised a loving son. He loved fishing, hunting, and gardening, but his greatest joy was in his grandchildren. He attended Pridgen Baptist Church.
Dewey leaves behind his loving wife of 64 years, Othell Cliett Scott of Douglas, Georgia; his son, Jimmy Scott and wife, Jan, of Hazlehurst, Georgia; three grandchildren: Ben Scott and wife, Catie, of Elgin, Oklahoma, Jared Scott and wife, Hillary, of Douglas, Georgia, and Anna Scott of Athens, Georgia; four great grandchildren: Will Scott, Izzy Scott, Charlie Scott, and John Scott; three sisters: Irene S. Varnadoe of Griffin, Georgia, Carolyn S. Purvis of Douglas, Georgia, and Betty S. Corbitt of Douglas, Georgia; along with a number of nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Dewey’s funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Pridgen Baptist Church with Rev. Wendell Mosely and Rev. Joel Auger officiating. Musical selections will include congregational hymns of “In The Garden” and “Amazing Grace”. Interment will follow in the Pridgen Baptist Church cemetery. Dewey’s family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the funeral service.
Active pallbearers will include Ben Scott, Jared Scott, Will Scott, Geoff Cosgrave, Joey Wooten, Andy Purvis, and Lee Cliett.
