The Coffee Lady Trojans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on solo home runs from Allie Pridgen and Ella Edge but couldn’t hold off the Irwin County Indians Tuesday in their season opener at Faircloth Field. The Indians came back and ended up winning 6-3.
Coffee struck first on Edge’s home run in the third. After a ground out, Pridgen hit the first pitch she saw out to center for a 2-0 lead.
The Indians, however, answered with four in the top of the fourth and two more in the sixth.
The Lady Trojans looked poised to make a comeback of their own in the seventh. With one out, Joceyln Fender and Edge singled to bring Karlee Douglas, the tying run, to the plate. Douglas singled, scoring Fender to cut Irwin’s lead in half and moving Edge to third. That was all the offense Coffee could muster and the Indians escaped with a 6-3 win.
Edge was 4-4 with a home run. Pridgen was 1-4 with a homer as well. Maggie Brown had two hits.
Brown also threw a complete game, giving up six runs (only one earned, thanks to three Coffee errors) on five hits. She struck out seven and walked one.
The Lady Trojans are 0-1 on the season. They travel to Jesup Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. showdown with Wayne County.
