The Coffee Lady Trojans relied on the long ball Wednesday night against the Wayne County Yellow Jackets in Jesup. In the end, though, it was the Yellow Jackets who turned the tide with a walk-off home run of their own for a 4-3 win.
Coffee’s Ella Edge led off the game with a solo home run, her second of the season, on the second pitch of the inning for a 1-0 lead. Wayne County’s Kallie Scott responded with a two-run home run of her own in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 advantage. The Lady Trojans tied the game at two when Jocelyn Fender homered in the third. They went up by one an inning later on Allie Pridgen’s solo home run, her second of the season as well. Wayne scored one in the fifth to knot the game at three.
Neither team scored until the bottom of the seventh when pinch hitter Eda Anderson won the game with a solo home run with one out to win the game.
Edge and Pridgen had two hits each and both hit their second home runs of the season.
Kanley Douglas pitched for the Lady Trojans and went the distance, giving up four runs (all earned) on seven hits. She struck out four and walked two.
Next up for Coffee is Ware County. The Gators come to Faircloth Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Trojans are 0-2 on the season. The Ware County game is the last on the schedule before region play begins on August 18 against Northside (Warner Robins).
