After losing to the Coffee Lady Trojans in a barn-burner Tuesday at Faircloth Field in Douglas, the Houston County Lady Bears exacted a little revenge Thursday in front of their fans. Houston spoiled Coffee’s perfect region record and swept a doubleheader, winning 11-1 and 9-0 in run-rule shortened games.
In game one, the Lady Trojans’ lone run came in the top of the third when Jocelyn Fender singled to score Ella Edge, who had also singled with two outs. The back-to-back singles accounted for two of Coffee’s three hits; Kanlee Douglas was the only other Lady Trojan to get a hit.
Maggie Brown pitched for Coffee. It was uncharacteristic outing for Brown; she surrendered 11 runs (six earned) on 10 hits with no strikeouts or walks.
Game two didn’t go any better. The Lady Trojans managed one more hit (all singles) but couldn’t get a run across. Douglas had two hits while Edge and Allie Pridgen had the other two.
Douglas took to the circle and the Lady Bears weren’t any kinder to her. Houston tallied nine runs on 11 hits. Seven of the nine runs were earned. Douglas struck out two and didn’t walk anyone.
The Lady Trojans are 9-4 overall and 7-2 against region opponents. Coffee has a break from region competition for about a week. The Lady Trojans play a doubleheader against Lowndes at Faircloth Field on Wednesday (3:45 p.m. game one start) they face Vidalia and Jeff Davis on Saturday. Tuesday, September 15, they return to region action against Veterans in Kathleen. On September 17, Veterans comes to Douglas for a doubleheader at Faircloth Field.
With a month left in the season, a preliminary playoff picture is starting to emerge. At the moment, Coffee is #11 in the GHSA’s Postseason Ranking (PSR), which will determine the playoff seeding. The top 32 teams make the playoffs with the top 16 hosting first-round games. Lee is tops in the region at #2 followed by Veterans (#10), Coffee (#11), and Houston (#12). Thomas County Central is sitting at #32. These rankings could, and likely will, change over the next month. Keep in mind that all games, both region and non-region alike, factor into the PSR.
