After cruising to a 7-1 win in game one over the Lowndes Vikettes Wednesday afternoon at Faircloth Field, the Coffee Lady Trojans decided to wait until the eighth inning to win game two. Right fielder Kia Wilson only had one hit in the game but it came at the right time – a two-out, bases loaded single in the extra frame to propel Coffee to a 9-8 win.
In game one, the Lady Trojans scored in two innings – the fourth and the sixth. Coffee plated five runs in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. Lowndes scored one in the sixth then the Lady Trojans answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs to extend their lead to 7-1. Abree Smith reached on an error then Ella Edge homered for Coffee’s final two runs.
Kanlee Douglas and Edge each had two hits. Both of Douglas’s hits were doubles. Addie Spikes also doubled. Edge drove in three while Spikes had two RBI.
Maggie Brown threw another complete game, surrendering one earned run on four hits. She struck out seven and walked two.
Game two, however, was a different story. Yes, the Lady Trojans jumped out to a big early lead but the Vikettes weren’t ready to give up. Thanks to a six-run fourth inning, Coffee built what seemed to be a comfortable 8-2 lead. But Lowndes refused to quit. The Vikettes scored three in the sixth and three in the seventh to tie the game at eight apiece and force extra innings.
The Lady Trojans went down in order in the bottom of the seventh. Lowndes did the same thing in the top of the eighth.
In the bottom of the eighth, Douglas singled with one out. Allie Pridgen singled, moving Smith, who was pinch running for Douglas, to second. Brown then reached on an infield single to load the bases. Spikes hit a grounder to shortstop Rylea Irvin (whose seventh homer tied the game), who threw home, forcing Smith at the plate. That brought Wilson up with two outs and the bases loaded. She didn’t waste any time and hit the first pitch she saw into center for a single. Pridgen easily scored for the game-winning run and the sweep.
Brown had three hits while Edge had two. Jocelyn Fender doubled for Coffee’s only extra base hit. She also drove in a pair. Edge and Fender scored two runs each.
Douglas threw seven innings, giving up eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Brown came in for the eighth and struck out one.
The Lady Trojans return to action with a pair of non-region neutral site games against Vidalia and Jeff Davis. Next Tuesday, Coffee travels to Kathleen to resume region play against Veterans. Thursday, they play a doubleheader against Veterans at Faircloth Field.
The Lady Trojans are 11-4 this season.
