October is just around the corner, and that means the City of Douglas is gearing up for its annual service promotions. Throughout the month, residents are invited to learn more about city services and take part in a variety of community activities.
The Douglas Fire Department will observe Fire Prevention Month and join the National Fire Protection Association in promoting Fire Prevention Week, held October 4–10, 2026. This year’s campaign, “Charge Into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” highlights everyday charging habits that help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires. The department will use the Fire Prevention Education Safety House during presentations at schools, daycare centers, and local businesses. Douglas Utility customers may register at City Hall (302 S. Madison Avenue) for a drawing on October 30, 2026, to win free smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. The Public Works/ESG Operations Department, along with Ryland Environmental, will host Fall Junk Free Week from Monday, October 5 through Friday, October 9, 2026. From 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., residents within the Douglas city limits can bring large household items and other unwanted junk to 1101 Shirley Avenue—at the corner of Shirley and College Park Drive—for free disposal. Please note that tires and hazardous chemicals cannot be accepted. Items must be placed on a trailer or in a spot where the clam truck can easily reach them, as on-site staff will not be available to assist with unloading. Participants should bring a copy of their utility bill as proof of residency. Don’t miss this great opportunity to clear out garages, attics, and storage spaces at no cost.
On October 3, 2026, the Douglas Police Department will participate in the Gopher Tortoise Festival, where citizens can meet officers, check out the new Tesla police vehicles, and enjoy a friendly game of cornhole. As part of the nationwide Faith & Blue Initiative, the DPD will also partner with The Sanctuary (714 Waldroup Ave.) for a Trunk or Treat event on October 28, 2026, beginning at 6 p.m. and continuing until the candy is gone. Faith & Blue aims to build safer, stronger, and more unified communities by promoting collaboration among law enforcement, residents, businesses, and community organizations. During October, the Douglas Natural Gas Department will recognize Natural Gas Month. As cooler weather approaches, customers may schedule a free pilot lighting—a $10.00 savings—by calling (912) 389-3427 during business hours (Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.). Public Power Week will also take place October 5–9, 2026. The City encourages everyone to “Thank a Lineman” and learn more about Douglas’ public electric services.
