Douglas Rotary Club launched October with a well-attended meeting at the South Georgia State College Alumni House celebrating the service organization’s newest member, Jessie Copcutt. Ms. Copcutt recently moved to Coffee County and is Director of The Salvation Army in Douglas.
Following the induction, welding student Aren Foskey Eason and cosmetology student Shamilla Powell were honored as Wiregrass Georgia Technical College/Douglas Rotary Students of the Month for September and October. Ms. Eason was joined by her husband and fellow WTC welding student Jarrett Eason, and their eight-month-old daughter Braleigh who made one of her first public appearances. Ms. Powell’s mother, Portia Powell, joined her for the recognition. Both students shared their thoughts about the future and how their goals were shaped by the support of family, friends, and the Wiregrass Technical College faculty and staff.
Coffee County School System’s REACH college scholarship also received continuing support from Douglas Rotary Club at the meeting. A check presentation was made on behalf of the club by Treasurer John Day.
Another highlight of the meeting was a leadership presentation by John Maxwell-certified speaker Robin Capehart who currently lives in Hahira, GA. Mr. Capehart, a former university president, attorney, and state government official in West Virginia, shared how we can better connect with one another to serve our businesses and community. He drew on his decades of working with effective leaders to encourage communicators to focus more on their audiences than themselves.
