Earlier this month, a Douglas woman was arrested for allegedly misusing 911 after she called 911 from a law enforcement vehicle.
According to a report from the sheriff’s office, on October 12, 2026, a deputy responded to a Tara Road address in reference to a possible fraud. The officer spoke with a woman named Pennie Steele, 40. The report says that Steele stated that two individuals were stealing money from her but she didn’t know the amount. She also said she wanted to go to jail, the report states.
Steele then said she did not feel safe at that location so the deputy agreed to take her to town. She asked to be taken to Walmart. On the way into town, the report says that Steele called 911 and asked why she was being taken to Walmart instead of to the police station. The officer stopped the car and asked her to hang up the phone but she refused, the report says. The officer attempted to arrest Steele but she resisted, according to the report.
The deputy finally handcuffed Steele and transported her to the Coffee County Jail. She was charged with obstruction and unlawful conduct during a 911 call/false report. Steele was booked into the jail and later released.
