The Coffee Trojans scored in every inning except one Saturday afternoon on their way to a run-rule win over the Christian Heritage Lions of Dalton. The Trojans are now 6-0 on the season.
Coffee plated two in the first, three in the second, two in the third, and three in the fifth to finish things off in five innings. The game lasted a little more than an hour.
Sophomore Ben Fussell started for Coffee. He gave up two hits, struck out two, and didn’t walk anyone in three innings of work. Junior Connor Stewart threw the last two innings. He struck out one and walked one.
The bottom of the fifth inning opened with the Trojans leading 7-0. Coffee needed three runs to end the game early. Senior Mason Lott led off with a walk. Then Stewart walked to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Senior Hunter Bennett was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Junior Gavin Beverly stepped in and swung at the first pitch he saw, doubling hard down the third base line and scoring Lott and Stewart. With Beverly on second and Bennett on third, the Lions intentionally walked junior Jadon Register to load the bases, still with nobody out.
The score was 9-0 and the Trojans needed one more to wrap things up. And junior Weston Brown answered. He connected on a 1-2 pitch and drove a single to left field, scoring Bennett to end the game.
Beverly and senior infielder Cannon Jones each had two RBI for Coffee. Junior Michael Strickland walked three times and senior Zae Smith stole two bases. The Trojans tallied just five hits but walked a total of 13 times.
Fussell improved to 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA on the season.
Coffee has three games this week: Tuesday at Brantley County, Thursday at Vidalia, and Friday at home against Toombs County (6 p.m).
