On February 23, 2024, a Douglas police officer responded to a Hollywood Drive address in reference to a shots fired call. Witnesses at the scene identified Travis Toombs, 48, of Douglas, as the suspect. By the time officers arrived, Toombs had left.

Toombs avoided capture for a couple of days but eventually, his luck ran out.

When officers arrived, the complainant stated that Toombs had been at the house grilling when, out of nowhere, he fired a shot from a 9mm handgun in the air, the incident report states. The complainant told Toombs “he was not going to be doing that on his property,” the report states. Toombs went to his car and put the handgun away. Then, as he came back onto the property, the report says he slapped a plate of food out of someone’s hands. According to the report, that led to a fight between Toombs and the complainant. Toombs then left the property.

Officers recovered a shell casing from the porch area and began searching for Toombs. A couple of days later, on February 26, 2024, just before 3 a.m., an officer saw Toombs’s car leave the Circle K on 441 North and turn onto McNeil Drive. The officer conducted a traffic stop and arrested Toombs. He was taken to the Coffee County Jail and charged with simple assault, reckless conduct, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and a probation violation for aggravated assault. He remains jailed.
