Mr. J.O. Vickers, age 81 of Douglas, Georgia passed away early Sunday morning, December 17, 2023 at Landmark hospital in Savannah, Georgia. Mr. Vickers was born on December 7, 1942 to the late Lillie Mae Croft McCall and the late Oliver Waldo (Dub) Vickers. In addition to his parents Mr. Vickers was preceded in death by his grandson, Dillon Michael Collodi.

J.O. attended Pembroke University and left college to pursue his professional baseball career with the Cincinnati Reds. His professional career was cut short due to a shoulder injury he incurred during spring training. His love for sports continued throughout his life. He could be found over the years swinging a bat, racquet or club. When no longer able to participate in sports himself, he could still be found with sports on TV, especially watching Alabama football intertwined with old western shows. He was an avid angler. Fishing in the Gulf by boat or local pond were equally loved. Most weekends you could find J.O. at the local dances with friends or an auction looking for the next big treasure. He had a love of all animals and we’re sure his lap is full of multiple furry friends who greeted him with tails wagging. He attended Harrell Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include his three daughters and sons-in-law: Shane D. Vickers of Wingate, North Carolina, Cameron Jones and husband Greg of Wingate, North Carolina, Jay Brandon Hargett and husband Jayme of Waxhaw, North Carolina; three grandchildren: Taylar Jones, Kaylin Parker, Trace Hargett; Special Friend, dance partner and fellow treasure hunter: Jean Adams of Douglas, Georgia; two brothers: Adrian Mann and wife Tammy of Columbia, South Carolina, Aubrey Mann and wife Rebecca of Columbia, South Carolina; and one sister, Audrey Mann Reyes and husband Chano of West Columbia, South Carolina. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Memorialization will be by cremation. A private celebration of life ceremony will be held by the family at a later date.
