Summer events and ongoing activities through the City of Douglas were the focal point of an otherwise humdrum regular meeting of the city commission on Thursday.

Main Street Coordinator Patti Merritt addressed the commission following the business portion of the meeting, noting several continuing programs along with major events scheduled in the near future.

The annual 4th of July Freedom Fest is slated for next Friday at Jardine Stadium/J.C. Adams Municipal Park. Gates will open at 5:00p.m. Parking and entertainment is free, and the fireworks disply will begin shortly after dark.

In August, the South Georgia Outdoor Expo returns to Douglas on the 22nd and 23rd. It will be held at the Central Square Complex, with one-day passes costing $5 and two-day passes $8. Children 12 and under will be admitted at no charge.

The Summer meal program continues through July 17, and residents may call (912) 384-2086, Ext. 6516, for more information.

In regular business, the city commission:

* Appointed Chris Trowell to serve on the library board

* Amended the FY ’14 budget on the recommendation of city finance director Charlie Davis

* Voted to grant a compliance waiver to a local business in regards to code standards at its building
