Emergency responders have struggled for years with residents who fail to place visible numeric signage at their homes and businesses, and county officials believe they have the solution: they’re going to provide signs to anyone who wants one.

County Code Enforcement Director Ray Parker states several hundred blank signs have already been purchased at a cost of $10 each and should be available to the public in a few weeks. The signs are blue in color and will be fitted with reflective adhesive numbers designating the address. The identifying marker is then attached to a small metal pole and driven into the ground.

Parker states his office will place the signs at any new address that requires a permit, such as  a new home construction or mobile home. Those wishing to have a sign at an existing address will be provided one, but will be responsible for the installation.

All buildings, residential and commercial, are already required by law to display the address number of the location, according to the Coffee County Code Ordinance. Violators could face a penalty of up to $1,000 and/or six months in the county jail. However, this law has rarely been enforced.

“We’re hoping this will solve a lot of the problems law enforcement, fire, and EMS are having,” Parker says. “If emergency personnel are having a hard time locating a home because the numbers aren’t displayed, it can drastically increase their response time when every minute counts.”

Parker states anyone with an existing address in the county who wishes to have one of the signs should call the code enforcement office at (912) 383-7580.
