The Georgia House District 169 race featuring political newcomers Republican Dominic LaRiccia and Democrat Larry Nesmith has garnered some national attention this week thanks to a recently posted article on examiner.com.

The article begins by stating, “As of Friday, October 24, more than 2,000 voters had cast a ballot during the early voting period in Coffee County. For rural Democrat Larry Nesmith , he is determined to reclaim House District 169 and turn the district ‘blue’ which had been previously held by Republican Chuck Sims who had switched parties a decade ago, but has had a troubled tenure which involved DUI arrests while serving as a state representative. Sims decided not to run and that left the door open for political newcomer and fellow Republican Dominic Lariccia to be the nominee.”

It goes on to conclue the race will ultimately be decided by Coffee County voters, especially in areas such as Douglas which has a high rate of minority voters.

It says, “So the House District 169 race will ultimately come down to turnout in Coffee County, especially in the city of Douglas (12,000 population) and other communities such as Nicholls (approximately 3,000 people) which is 54 percent African-American. Douglas is a majority-minority city in which African-Americans comprise 52 percent of the city’s population and Hispanics comprise close to seven percent of Douglas’ population.”
