South Georgia State College’s bid for a second GCAA tournament championship in five years was not meant to be Saturday afternoon as the Georgia Highlands Chargers pulled away in the second half to win 81-70.

“We had the perfect setup to win,” said head coach Cory Baldwin.  “We were playing at home and had a great crowd behind us.  It’s tough when your goal is in sight and you can’t finish.”

Jovante’ Spivey led the Hawks (27-6, 14-4) with 25 points.  Daniel Peace had another complete game of 13 points, five rebounds, six assists, and nine steals.  JeVaughn Sanchez finished with 12 points, while Cody Helgeland had 10 points and six rebounds.

The Hawks received the GCAA runner-up trophy from GCAA Commissioner David Elder at the conclusion of the game.
