The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office has released a statement regarding the discovery of a body floating in a pond in Oak Park. The body has yet to be identified. The sheriff department’s statement is featured below in its entirety:

On Monday April 6, 2015 at approximately 10:56 a.m., deputies of the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office responded to 252 Mahogany Road in Douglas with reference to a body floating in a pond behind this residence.

Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the property owner. He stated that while cleaning up rental property he noticed an unusual object floating in a pond behind the property. The investigating deputies went to the pond and determined that the object was actually human remains. Coffee County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations division was contacted and assumed the investigation.  Subsequent to the initial criminal investigation, they requested Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Crime Scene Unit to assist in processing the scene.

Preliminarily the investigation shows that human remains in a high state of decomposition were found and the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office is not ruling out any methods or motivations behind the death of this individual. The body will be sent to the state crime lab for an autopsy and possible identification.  The case remains under investigation. Anyone who has information regarding this case is urged to call the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office at (912) 384-4227 or Coffee E-911 at (912) 384-7675.
