In response to critical needs for funding to the local library system, community organizers on Thursday gathered to create the Friends of Satilla Regional Library group.

The group’s purpose will be to serve and advocate for the needs of the library, which is currently facing  unprecedented cutbacks in services, along with the possibility of some current employees losing their jobs if the organization can’t find funding soon.

The library system is funded through state grants with assistance from the city, county, and local school system. Satilla Library Director Mark Cole said earlier this week that decreasing state funds have caused severe setbacks for the library and local government entities have refused to provide any further help outside of their current budgeted contributions.

The first meeting of the Friends of Satilla Library will take place Thursday, June 11, at 5:30 p.m. at the Douglas library. Organizers will be discussing what the citizens of Coffee County and surrounding areas can do to encourage local funding.

A Facebook page has been created for the group and can be found by clicking here.
