The good news is that the CCA Lady Patriots will play for a second consecutive Class A state softball championship Saturday morning in Columbus. The bad news is that they’re entering the game with one loss. And they’re playing undefeated David Emanuel Academy – the team that handed CCA that one defeat. At noon on Friday, the Lady Patriots and the DEA Eagles played for a spot in the championship game. Going back to the state tournament last year, CCA had beaten DEA three times in a row. On October 16, 2025, the Law Enforcement Division of CSX Transportation notified local authorities after receiving reports of two individuals unlawfully train hopping. Deputies with the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office responded and initiated efforts to locate and apprehend the suspects, later identified as 21-year-old Jacob Cuvellier of Auburn, New Hampshire, and 18-year-old Charles August Rowe of Hartland, New Hampshire. According to reports, a CSX conductor observed the two individuals aboard a train earlier in the evening. Round two of the GIAA Class A state softball tournament is in the books and the CCA Lady Patriots are winners again. CCA defeated the Crisp Academy Wildcats 10-4 Thursday afternoon in Columbus. The Lady Patriots play again Friday at noon. Things started off a little shaky for CCA. They fell behind 2-1 after an inning then exploded for six runs in the second inning. Game one of the GIAA Class A state softball tournament went to the CCA Lady Patriots. CCA defeated the Westwood Academy Lady Wildcats 15-0 in three innings Thursday morning. The Lady Patriots will play again at 2 p.m. against the winner between Fullington and Crisp. CCA jumped out to an insurmountable 11-0 lead in the first inning. The Coffee High Lady Trojans’ season came to an end Monday afternoon at the hands of the defending 5A state champion Creekview Grizzlies in the first round of the state playoffs in Canton. The two teams opened the postseason with a doubleheader; the Grizzlies won both games by scores of 8-0 and 18-0.In game one, Creekview scored in every inning but one. The next Georgia governor’s election is a little over a year away. Already, two Republican candidates have visited Coffee County and one Democratic candidate, former Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond, is scheduled to visit town later this week. Late last month, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who has declared for the election, made a stop in Douglas. Raffensperger spoke to a group at South Georgia State College and took time to mention several initiatives regarding licensing and election security at the SOS office. County commissioners approved the bids for the Premier Sports Complex soccer fields, the purchase of a new excavator for the road department, and conducted the first reading of a rezoning request from Carlton “Pig” Dorminey for 10 acres on Highway 32 West from R1, Residential to C, Commerical, among other items of business, at last week’s regular county commission meeting. Two years ago, the city and county received grants for recreation facilities improvements at the Premier Sports Complex. The city used its funds to refurbish the Huckaby Complex.
