Thursday afternoon, Clay Lott, president of the Douglas Rotary Club, presented Vernon Talkington with a check for $10,000 to assist the HOPE Center with the programs and activities Vernon and his wife, Angie, conduct through the HOPE Center. The funds came from money raised through the Joe Day Memorial Golf Tournament which Rotary hosted in April. The Talkingtons came to Douglas 24 years ago while on a sabbatical after 20 years in ministry in Illinois. They passed through Douglas on their way to Panama City. At Tuesday morning’s regular meeting of the Board of Elections and Registration, board member Ernestine Thomas-Clark made a motion to accept a resolution presented to the board seeking an internal investigation, which would be conducted by independent legal counsel, to investigate the alleged breaches of the Coffee County elections system that took place in January of 2021. Retired local attorney Jim Hudson wrote the resolution and sent it to each board member electronically before the meeting. Thomas-Clark’s motion did not pass due to a lack of a second. At Monday’s regular city commission meeting, commissioners agreed to grant a special exception variance with an 80 percent maximum impervious surface coverage to the Foresite Group of Peachtree Corners in order to develop the ALDI grocery store along with three other as-yet unnamed national retailers. The site of the development is the north side of the intersection of Bowens Mill Road and South Gaskin Avenue. The Unified Land Development Code states that the coverage amount won’t exceed 50 percent.
