According to a recent press release from Governor Brian Kemp, the City of Douglas and Coffee County are among the Georgia communities that will receive funding from the State of Georgia for projects that improve parks, recreation facilities, sidewalks, and healthy food access that were disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. At Monday’s county commission meeting, commissioners denied a rezoning request in the Oak Park community. Prudencio Reynoso had submitted an application to rezone .66 acres at 56 Elm Street from Commercial to Warehouse Light Industrial. The property is vacant and sits at the corner of Highway 221 North and Elm Street. Mr. Reynoso had plans to manufacture cargo trailers if commissioners approved the request. Both the Planning Commission and county staff had recommended that the request be denied, primarily because though zoned Commercial, the property surrounding the tract is residential. Thursday afternoon, Clay Lott, president of the Douglas Rotary Club, presented Vernon Talkington with a check for $10,000 to assist the HOPE Center with the programs and activities Vernon and his wife, Angie, conduct through the HOPE Center. During the council members’ time for comments at the Nicholls City Council meeting Monday night, council member and mayor pro tem Tracey Darby Jackson admonished unnamed city employees for what she called “disrespect and insubordination” to a packed council meeting room. “The city employees — they’re coming in and they’re gossiping about the mayor and I feel like if this continues, the mayor needs to write them up. This is not a gossip session. You come here to work. You need to work and go home and stop gossiping about people. It’s just out of hand about them…

At Tuesday morning’s regular meeting of the Board of Elections and Registration, board member Ernestine Thomas-Clark made a motion to accept a resolution presented to the board seeking an internal investigation, which would be conducted by independent legal counsel, to investigate the alleged breaches of the Coffee County elections system that took place in January of 2021. Retired local attorney Jim Hudson wrote the resolution and sent it to each board member electronically before the meeting. Thomas-Clark’s motion did not pass due to a lack of a second.
