The Coffee Trojans brought home three first place trophies from the region cross country meet Thursday in Warner Robins. Cameron Watson won his second consecutive individual region championship while Abbey Arnett won her second region title as well (she won her first title her sophomore year). Arnett’s performance catapulted the women’s team into first place while the men finished second overall. Watson ran a 17:31 (5:39 per mile). Arnett posted a 20:24 (6:35 per mile). The Georgia Supreme Court has thrown out the murder indictment for Jay Towns, who stands accused of killing Bud and June Runion in 2015. A Superior Court judge canceled the charge last year. News that the state Supreme Court agreed with last year’s ruling broke Monday morning. Towns is believed to have advertised a 1966 Mustang for sale on Craigslist. The Runions traveled from Marietta to Jacksonville, Ga., to purchase the car. However, Towns has been accused of killing the Runions and taking the money for the car. Former Ward 5 city commissioner Ronnie Anderson, who was seeking his old seat in the Nov. 5 election, has officially withdrawn from the race. Four years ago, Anderson decided not to seek re-election. Cindy McNeill ran unopposed for the seat. Earlier this year, Anderson announced that he would be running again for the seat in November. Wednesday afternoon, Anderson released a statement to The Douglas Enterprise withdrawing from the election, citing family considerations. He has not issued a statement to DouglasNow.com. Monday afternoon, for the second time in less than a week, authorities responded to a local aviation accident – this time at the Douglas Gene Chambers Municipal Airport. Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the Georgia State Patrol worked the accident. Firefighters from the Douglas Fire Department and other first responders also assisted. The reports detailing the accident are not available just yet. A crop duster crashed near Willacoochee Friday morning, injuring the pilot and leaving 231 residents without power. According to witnesses, the plane clipped power lines near Talmadge McKinnon Road in Atkinson County, not far from Willacoochee. The plane tumbled to the earth, leaving debris in trees and across a large swath of ground. The pilot was taken to Coffee Regional Medical Center and then transported via Air-Evac to Savannah for further treatment. He suffered visible injuries but was stable. The Community Foundation of Coffee County has unveiled its Wheeler Park vision plan. The Foundation has hosted public meetings at the Satilla Regional Library announcing the plan. Last Thursday, Julia Wood of the Community Foundation of Central Georgia (of which the Community Foundation of Coffee County is an affiliate) spoke to the Douglas Rotary Club about the Wheeler Park project. After the meeting, Wood presented members of the Foundation with a check for $22,500 to fund the initial phases of the project. Tuesday night, two individuals were shot at a residence on South Gaskin Avenue, according to the Douglas Police Department. The shootings took place around 10 p.m. Both victims were transported to Coffee Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries; each had been shot in the legs. One victim was treated and released. The other was treated then taken to the Ben Hill County Detention Center on an unrelated warrant through the Ben Hill County Sheriff’s Office. Drug officers arrested Julio Roberto Pascual on Sept. 19, 2019, following complaints from citizens regarding the sale of prescription drugs. Pascual was arrested at a home in the Oak Park community. Officers found six different controlled substances in the house. Pascual had no prescription for the medications and was arrested and charged with six counts of possession of a controlled substance, one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and one count of drugs not in original container. Two days after signing a $54 million contract extension, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill suffered a serious injury that will sideline him for several weeks. Just how long he will be out remains to be seen. Hill came out of the game in the second quarter after taking a hard hit from Jacksonville Jaguars defensive back Jalen Ramsey.
