It’s not very often that a team loses the turnover battle and holds on to win the game. It’s even rarer for a team in that position to win big. But that’s exactly what happened to the Coffee Trojans Friday night against the #1-seeded Stephenson Jaguars. During the vote tally at the Coffee County elections office Tuesday night, one voting card was left in a machine, which means those votes were not transmitted to the Secretary of State’s office that night. The votes were, however, included in the local returns posted at the elections office in Douglas. Officials discovered the oversight Thursday afternoon — about the same time as an attorney with the Stacey Abrams campaign called out Coffee County as one of four Georgia counties with alleged voting irregularities. Republicans made a strong statement in Coffee County Tuesday night, winning all of the races on the ballot in convincing fashion. Turnout for the mid-term election was higher than it was four years ago; 11,639 voters cast ballots, a turnout of 53 percent. The special local option sales tax for education (ESPLOST), the only local decision on the ballot, passed by a large margin, 7,392 to 3,478. The Coffee Trojans last lost a home game on Nov. 4, 2016, when the Lee County Trojans rolled into town and came away with a 31-20 win. Thursday afternoon, a Coffee County jury found Jasmine Williams guilty on counts of malice murder and felony murder in the fatal shooting of Greg Swinson, 25. The shooting took place in September of 2017. Attorneys selected the jury Monday and testimony began Tuesday. The jury began deliberations Wednesday afternoon and reached a verdict Thursday afternoon. Sentencing will take place Friday morning. Rae Curruth, the former Carolina Panthers wide receiver who was convicted of conspiring to kill Cherica Adams, has been released from prison. He served an 18-year sentence after a friend of his – whom he hired – killed Adams, the mother of his unborn son. The child, Chancellor Lee Adams, survived but is severely impaired. Carruth, a first-round draft pick in 1997, hired Van Brett Watkins Sr., a friend, to kill Adams. The shooting took place on Nov. 16, 1999, during Carruth’s third season with the Panthers.
