An escaped inmate from Bacon County was captured Friday night to the “COPS” theme song “Bad Boys.” On Friday, May 21, Jeremy Smith, a Bacon County inmate, escaped during transport, according to a Facebook post on the Bacon County Sheriff’s Department’s page. Around 10 p.m., Smith kicked out a window of the transport vehicle and jumped from the moving vehicle. Though he was restrained, he ran into a wooded area in an attempt to escape. The CCA Lady Patriots are the GAPPS Division I state champions. Juniors Jenna Williams and Sierra Dorminey played each other in the state championship match, which took place in Rome earlier this week. Williams outlasted her teammate and won the individual title with Dorminey taking the runner-up spot. Anslei Reyes and Lainey Griffin won the state doubles championship as well. The Lady Patriots, who won the last GAPPS state tennis championship in 2019 (no school played tennis in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), won the team state title as well. Earlier this year, 32 of the 33 rookie state troopers who were fired after allegedly cheating on an exam were cleared by the Georgia Police Officer Standards and Training Council. Two of the troopers — Eric Guerrero of Coffee County and Kyle Thompson of Berrien County – were supposed to be stationed at the Douglas post. Nine of the troopers, including Guerrero, are back on the job, according to a Facebook post by the Georgia Department of Public Safety. Tuesday afternoon in a special ceremony before the South Georgia State College Hawks played the Georgia Highlands Chargers at George Cook Stadium in Douglas, former South Georgia head baseball coach Scott Sims was inducted into the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association Hall of Fame. Coach Sims coached South Georgia for 21 years (1990-2011) and amassed 589 victories. Operation Sandy Bottom has yielded another arrest. On Friday, April 9, 2021, deputies in South Florida arrested Marquis Jerome “Joc” Jacques during a traffic stop. Jacques was a target in January’s Operation Sandy Bottom, a federal drug conspiracy investigation which rounded up a number of alleged drug dealers in the area. A Coffee County native, Jacques had been in Alma and teams working Bacon County during Sandy Bottom had been searching for him. Coffee County sheriff’s deputies initially responded to a possible domestic disturbance in the area of Highridge Road in northern Coffee County. Upon arrival at the location, deputies discovered one person had been shot during the incident. Deputies subsequently responded to Coffee Regional Medical Center to meet with the alleged victim. As a result of an investigation into the incident by Coffee County detectives, Ashley Brooke Anthony was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and transported to the Coffee County Jail.
