Former Coffee County Jail Officer James Avery Dixon has been placed on the Georgia Sex Offender Registry after pleading guilty earlier this month to one count of sexual battery. Dixon was arrested in August 2015 and charged with three counts of sexual assault by a person with supervisory or disciplinary authority and one count of violation of oath by a public officer. A Douglas man faces charges of drug distribution after authorities allegedly discovered a quantity of methamphetamine during a routine traffic stop Wednesday. Officials with the Douglas –Coffee Drug Unit assisted Georgia State Troopers, who initiated a traffic stop on Carl Leslie Chaney in the area of Ramblewood Rd. for failure to maintain lane and driving without a seatbelt. Following a brief investigation, Chaney was found to be in possession of methamphetamine and marijuana and was subsequently charged wtih with intent to distribute methamphetamine (12.4 grams) and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. A Coffee County man remains hospitalized today after suffering a gunshot wound late Friday following an altercation at a residence in the Wheeler Park area of Douglas. Just after 11:30 p.m. Friday, officers with the Douglas Police Department responded to the 200 block of North Wheeler Avenue in reference to reported gun shots. Officers observed several people outside of a residence at 201 North Wheeler Avenue, where they discovered 31-year-old Wade Bryan Strickland had been shot. A Douglas man wanted on two outstanding warrants was jailed on multiple charges Sunday following a traffic stop that also yielded a quantity of methamphetamine. A Coffee County Sheriff’s Office deputy was assisted by the Douglas –Coffee Drug Unit on a traffic stop of a dirt bike that occurred on Ramblewood Road in the Green Acres community. The driver, identified as Adam Jerrell Morris, was stopped for no helmet, no tag light, registration requirements, and open container. A Douglas woman was jailed recently for alleged methamphetamine distribution after neighbors alerted officials of suspected drug activity. The Douglas-Coffee Drug Unit and Georgia State Probation Officers conducted a search at 631 Taylor Circle on March 18. During the investigation, authorities discovered six packages of methamphetamine located in a bedroom, along with several digital scales. The approximate weight of the methamphetamine was 3.3 grams. As a result, Candace M. Railey, age 27 of Douglas, was arrested for possession of ethamphetamine with the intent to distribute. An Alma man was jailed Wednesday after allegedly running over a woman in a power wheelchair with his vehicle and fleeing the scene. Alma Police responded to a hit and run accident Wednesday afternoon involving a female victim in a powered wheelchair. The victim had been struck by a car traveling south on S. Wayne St. near the intersection of E. 20th St. She was ejected several feet from her chair and had sustained visible head injuries. The Coffee County Board of Commissioners approved a motion Monday that will provide 42 body cameras to the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, along with several additional dashboard cameras and upgrades to existing ones. The total cost for the equipment and upgrades will be just under $145 thousand, $22 thousand of which will be spent out of the sheriff’s office budget. The remainder will come from SPLOST and DOT funds, according to County Administrator Wesley Vickers. Along with the body cameras, 19 patrol vehicles will be equiped with either new or upgraded systems.

A group of about 20 local 4-H parents and volunteers appeared Monday before the Coffee County Commission to petition help in financing the employment of current County Agent Alyse Hall. The grant that supports Hall’s position is set to expire this August, and supporters say she is an invaluable asset to the 4-H program and local community.
