A storm that tore through Coffee County Friday afternoon left a trail of devastation in its path, causing power outages and blocking traffic on one of the area’s major highways. Around 1:45 p.m., heavy winds and rainfall hit southern Coffee County. About five miles south of Douglas on U.S. Hwy. 441, a pine tree gave way, knocking down power lines and blocking the entire southbound lane. Residents of the Green Acres community, along with others in the general area, experienced power losses for some time following occurrence. A memorial fund has been established to assist the family of Miss Julia Cheyene Lynch, the 13-year-old Coffee County student who tragically died last week, with funeral expenses. Services for Julia will be held Friday, June 12, at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Crosby Funeral Home in Alma. Interment will follow in Elizabeth Chapel Church Cemetery. An investigation that began last week after a couple was arrested for buying marijuana in the presence of their two infant children led to the arrest of a suspected drug dealer last night. Officials reported that Douglas – Coffee Drug Unit detectives and K-9 officers, along with Coffee County Sheriff’s Office deputies and the Georgia State Patrol, executed a search warrant at 704 Sellers St. in Douglas Wednesday evening. Coffee County Sheriff’s investigators say Francis Lee Grantham abandoned over one pound of methamphetamine after authorities attempted to stop him for a traffic violation yesterday. Grantham fled on foot and officials are asking the public’s helping in locating him. Tuesday night, a deputy with the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop the driver of a reckless ATV on Wood Pecker Trail outside of Douglas. The driver, identified as Francis Lee Grantham, fled on foot after his ATV broke down. One man allegedly involved in a shootout that occurred Tuesday afternoon is behind bars this morning on unrelated charges, though officials state they expect to be obtaining warrants soon for his involvement in the incident. A multi-jurisdictional investigation conducted by the Douglas-Coffee Drug Unit and other agencies has led to the arrest and subsequent indictments of nearly two dozen people from Jeff Davis and other surrounding counties. A local mom and dad were jailed together last week following a domestic spat in which both parties accused the other of destroying personal cell phones. The Coffee County community was shocked and saddened this week to learn of the untimely death of a local, 13-year-old student. Today, Sheriff Doyle Wooten released the following statement: “On June 5, 2015 at approximately 4:21 p.m., deputies were dispatched to 120 Sioux Trail in reference to a possible death of a 13-year-old female. One man was hospitalized Tuesday afternoon with non-life threatening injuries after he and at least one other individual fired multiple gunshots at each other on the property of one of the city’s housing projects.
