The City of Douglas has received several calls from concerned citizens who are being contacted by an unknown person claiming to be an employee of the City of Douglas. The person on the phone tells the citizen that their utilities will be disconnected if payment is not made over the phone. The City of Douglas does not solicit payment for services through the telephone. Citizens are urged not to release financial information to anyone claiming to be representing the City of Douglas. “This is a homeless shelter,” says Jerome Burkett, “but our mission is to meet people where they are and share the love of Jesus Christ.” Burkett is the founder of The Refuge, a homeless shelter for men in Douglas. The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office is reporting the recovery of a total of $4,700 in alleged stolen firearms and power tools as a result two recent investigations. The sheriff’s office states deputies responded to a location off Highway 32 West in reference to a burglary which had occurred between the dates of February 24 and March 31. Several firearms were reported to have been stolen during the incident. Sheriff’s detectives were able to recover several of the stolen guns, which were valued at approximately $3,500. An armed robbery that occurred early this morning at Aden’s Minit Mart has police searching for one suspect. Douglas police officers responded to Aden’s at 1020 East Baker Highway at around 1:30a.m., following a report of an armed robbery. A store employee stated to the officers that a black male, who was wearing a black hoodie-style jacket, blue jeans, and a black mask that hid his face, entered the store carrying a dark-colored handgun, which he allegedly pointed at the clerk. Two alleged marijuana growing operations have been disrupted by local investigators following the discovery of fifty-seven plants in two separate incidents. The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office reports that on June 11, Coffee drug unit detectives and Georgia State Patrol aviation were conducting surveillance when a marijuana grow was discovered in the back yard of 125 South Pointe Drive. As a result, twenty-six plants were found to be growing in a dog pen at the residence, with an additional fifteen being located in a wooded area adjacent to the location. A man wanted in connection with a home invasion that occurred in January has been arrested and jailed, sheriff’s officials reported Wednesday. Kevin Dontea Coney had been wanted in connection to a home invasion which occurred on January 21 off Yellow Brick Road in Coffee County. Coney was located and arrested Wednesday morning by detectives for his alleged involvement in the incident. Sheriff Doyle Wooten stated his appreciation to the public for information and tips which helped lead investigators to Coney’s apprehension.

Officials with the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office are asking for the community’s assistance in helping to locate convicted sex offender Michael Tyrone Jordan. Jordan was convicted of statutory rape in Coffee County in 2007 and, as part of his sex offender status, is required to report any change of address, as well as an annual report within 72 hours of his birthday. He last listed his address as “homeless,” and was required to give daily reports to his probation office, as well as the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office to advise them of his whereabouts.
