One of the occupants of a vehicle involved in a frightful traffic accident on Christmas Eve has passed away. Thursday, December 28, 2023, Jazmine Simpson, 26, succumbed to injuries suffered in the crash, which happened on Highway 441 at the entrance to GreeneTree Lakes subdivision. The accident took place around 3 p.m. Simpson was suffering from an asthma attack at her home when her mother, Lawanda Leggett, put her in their car, along with three siblings, and headed to Coffee Regional Medical Center. Of the various postseason football awards out there, the most prestigious is the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s All State team. The AJC released its All State list this morning and several Trojans made the team. Cheryl Ann Baker, 66, wife of new Still Waters Outreach president Rev. Richard Baker, passed away on December 24, 2023, as a result of injuries sustained in an auto accident. The wreck occurred in Brantley County. Another vehicle struck Baker’s vehicle. She was traveling with two of her children, both of who were injured in the accident. One individual is in custody and another is on the way to Coffee Regional Medical Center following a Christmas morning shooting near Nicholls. Monday morning, a shooting was reported on Roberts Cemetery Road just east of Nicholls. According to sources, one individual, identified as Kevin Stone, 36, allegedly went to another’s home and shot him in the head. Stone then allegedly left and went to a residence a short distance away. Officers responded to both locations. The victim was breathing but injured seriously. Stone was arrested and transported to the Coffee County Jail where he remains. …

A hit and run accident that occurred last week led to the arrest of a Waycross man on several traffic charges. According to a report from the Douglas Police Department, an accident took place on December 15 just after 7 a.m. The wreck took place at the intersection of East Baker Highway and McDonald Road. The driver of vehicle two reported that another driver, identified as Axel Aquino Hernandez, 26, of Waycross, had struck her vehicle and left the scene. Officers located Hernandez and stopped him. As Douglas police officers were heading out for patrol on December 16, a corporal mentioned that they needed to be on the lookout for Jennifer Hodnett, 42, of Douglas, who was wanted for allegedly shoplifting at Circle K on the south end of town. Around 9 p.m. that night, an officer saw Hodnett and another individual identified as Derick Smith in the area of Highway 221 North and Bowens Mill Road Southeast. Both were riding bicycles and they were riding on the wrong side of the road, according to an incident report from the Douglas Police Department. …
