Senior Kate Merritt (1600 meters and 3200 meters) and two relay teams — the boys 4×100 and 4×200, both comprised of Travis Adams, JaQuan Harrison, Anthony Paulk and Tyrese Woodgett — qualified for the state track meet at Sectionals last week at Union Grove High School. Thursday afternoon, a Coffee County jury convicted Ernest Knighton, 49, of armed robbery and two counts of false imprisonment for robbing the Circle K convenience store at 101 East Baker Highway on August 17, 2022. He was sentenced to 20 years for the armed robbery conviction and 10 more for each of the false imprisonment charges for a total of 40 years. Knighton and one other individual robbed the store around 3 a.m. on August 17 then fled on foot. The following morning, Knighton was arrested and charged in…

On April 24, a detective with the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jasmine Tello, 20, on illegal drug charges after stopping her vehicle on Highway 441 South. The report states that the detective was working traffic at the intersection of Highway 441 and Rebecca S. Waldron Road when a blue 2010 Nissan Maxima drove by. The driver, later identified as Tello, attempted to hide behind the Maxima’s B pillar (the roof support located between the front and back doors). The report states that this is considered deceptive behavior and is often an indicator of criminal activity. …

Around 12:30 p.m., officers responded to a shooting on Mark Hanna, just a few blocks from the George Washington Carver Freshman Academy. The victim had been shot twice — once in the back and once in the leg. He was reportedly sitting in a vehicle at the time of the shooting and was shot at least once through the window.
