A traffic stop in Oak Park landed a Douglas man in jail after officers discovered cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana in the trunk of the vehicle. According to an incident report from the sheriff’s office drug unit, on March 29, officers saw a black car on Sand Street, the tag of which did not match the vehicle. The officers stopped the vehicle and the driver, Howard McGinty, 59, of Douglas, gave his consent for the officers to search the vehicle. During the search, detectives found a grocery bag inside a compartment in the trunk. The bag contained…
Maybe your Monday morning was better than that of those involved in these two incidents. Before 10 a.m. Monday, police officers, firefighters, and EMS responded to two separate incidents just a few blocks apart. In the first incident, an individual in a U-Haul truck at the Douglas U-Haul rental location (at the rear of the Comfortel Suites on North Peterson Avenue) crashed into and damaged at least 12 U-Haul trailers. It’s one of those incidents that you look at and just wonder, How in the world did the truck end up like that? While the damage…

Bad weather in April in and around the Baymeadows subdivision is becoming almost as much of a given as the tax deadline. For the third consecutive year, a terrible storm unleashed its fury on the subdivision in western Coffee County, damaging property, tearing down trees, closing roads, and knocking out power. In late April 2021, a tornado barreled through Baymeadows, destroying the southern portion of the neighborhood. If you ride through the affected area, you can still see the damage. Last year, another storm came through. The damage wasn’t as bad but it was still scary — especially…

In the early morning hours of Thursday, March 30, the Georgia General Assembly wrapped the 2023 session. As usual, legislators accomplished some of what they wanted, left a few bills on the table for next year, and compromised on others. Legislators passed a $384 billion budget as well as bills on raising truck weights, prosecutor oversight, transgender issues, and gang-related sentencing guidelines. While those bills made the headlines, there were others that flew under the radar – bills that are a little off the beaten path and don’t invoke the talking points of the day. One…
