A former president of South Georgia State College has passed away. Dr. Virginia McSwain Carson, age 75, passed on Saturday, April 29, 2023. A celebration of life will be held at Madison Presbyterian Church in Madison, GA on Monday, May 1, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Arch Baker officiating. Family will receive visitors after the service in the Fellowship Hall. Burial will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. An armed robbery suspect from Douglas has been shot eight times in Camden County while allegedly attempting another armed robbery. He is hospitalized in critical condition. According to the Douglas Police Department, on Wednesday, April 28, 2023, officers responded to an armed robbery call in the parking lot of 831 South Peterson Avenue. The following day, officers reviewed video footage from several businesses near the location and identified the suspect as Qwinntavus Jordan. Investigators took several warrants on Jordan, including armed robbery, two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm…

Breyonna Watts, 25, of Douglas, is in jail on a number of charges after she allegedly hit a family member with her car, crashed into another car in the process and fled, leading Nicholls police and Coffee County deputies on a chase before eventually coming to a stop at a house in Nicholls. A Douglas man remains in the Coffee County Jail after allegedly fleeing from police officers on foot following a traffic stop Saturday night. A report from the Douglas Police Department describes the incident. According to the report, a police officer noticed a gray Mercedes-Benz traveling west on East Baker Highway with a likely window tint violation. The officer stopped the vehicle at Estes Park Apartments. The report states that the officer smelled marijuana in the vehicle and asked the driver, Ja’Tavius Deikevioun Bennett, to step outside of the vehicle. Nevin Swanson (800 meters) and the 4×200 relay team of Anthony Paulk, Tyrese Woodgett, Jaquan Harrison, and Travis Adams are Region 1-5A champions in their events.
