Mrs. Betty Edna Turner Taylor, age 74, of Douglas passed away Saturday, November 22, 2014, at the Memorial Medical Center in Savannah, following a short illness. She was born July 14, 1940 to the late Archie Daniel Turner and the late Doris Iona Whitley Turner. She was also preceded in death by 3 Brothers, Hansel Turner, Troy Turner, and Travis Turner. Local philanthropist and developer Francis Lott received the Georgia Economic Developers Association (GEDA) Volunteer of the Year award at the association’s November annual awards luncheon. Governor Nathan Deal presented Lott with the award, which was offered in recognition of Lott’s outstanding contribution to the spirit of volunteerism and the economic development of Coffee County and the state of Georgia. He is only one of two people in the state who have ever received the award more than once, taking home the award once before in 1995. The South Georgia State College swim team continued their winning ways last Saturday with two wins against Thomas University and host LaGrange College at the LaGrange Invitational Meet. In a double-dual format, the women defeated Thomas 124 to 53 and LaGrange 159 to 11. The men also collected two wins by besting Thomas 113 to 71 and LaGrange 138 to 45. Among swimmers winning events for the Hawks were Carolyn Ives of Carrollton, in the 200 individual medley, 50 free style, and the 100 breaststroke. Jovante’ Spivey has been named the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division I Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 10-16. Spivey, a 6’0″ sophomore from Savannah, Ga., averaged 21.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, four assists, and 2.7 steals for South Georgia State College last week, which included games against Faith Baptist Prep Academy, Daytona Basketball Academy, and Tallahassee Community College. The Hawks (6-1) defeated Brewton-Parker College’s junior varsity team Tuesday night, 108-72. South Georgia State College’s Cultural Exchange Club celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month through October by hosting a number of activities to celebrate the diversity of SGSC’s students. Under the direction of Dr. Yuna Chen, Professor of Economics and club advisor, students were able to broaden their experiences and be introduced to a culture they may not befamiliar with in order to expand their knowledge of cultures from around the world. After an impressive season, South Georgia State College’s women’s soccer team was a mere three goals away from nationals this year, falling to Darton State College 4-2 after leading 2-0 at halftime in the region finals. This is the first time in school history that the Hawks have played in the regional finals, and it sets the bar high for future years.
