The annual Hometown Harvest will take place on Thursday, October 30, from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the vacant lot adjacent to city hall, which is located on Madison Avenue. The kids play area will be from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with candy distribution taking place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Registration for the kids costume contest will begin at 4 p.m. and end promptly at 5:30 p.m. The costume contest will begin at 6:15 p.m., with winners being announced at 7:30 p.m. The age limit for those participating in trick-or-treating and costume contest is 12 years…
Westside administrators, faculty, staff, and students joined the community to show their support for former Westside Teacher Lisa Chriqui, who lost her battle with cancer, and others affected by this disease on October 23 by dressing as “pink as possible.” Ms. Chriqui will always have a special place in the hearts of all Wildcats and “thinking pink” certainly brought back fond memories for those she touched at Westside. -Submitted by Westside Elementary School
The Douglas Fire Department participated in the 2014 Safety and Wellness Festival and promoted Fire Safety Week, October 5 – 11. Fire department personnel visited several preschools during Fire Prevention Week and spoke to the preschoolers about fire safety and the importance of working smoke alarms.Additionally, an art contest was held, and the winners from Westside Elementary School and their classmates are pictured below. Coffee County Sheriff Doyle and Linda Wooten invite the community to their second annual Family Fun Day, which will be held this Saturday, October 25, from 4 p.m. until. The event will take place at 1079 Ga. Connector 206 NW, Douglas, Georgia. There will be games, hayrides, horse and buggy rides, train rides, face painting, miniature golf and other activities. October is Natural Gas Month. Mike Hudson, Natural Gas/Water/Wastewater Director, recently spoke with children at Indian Creek Elementary School about compressed natural gas (CNG) as an alternative fuel source and about the new City of Douglas compressed natural gas fueling facility. A telemedicine demonstration was held at the Broxton-Mary Hayes Elementary School PTO meeting Thursday night, October 16. Amy Beach, LPN, Telemedicine Coordinator, and Sandra SImmons, LPN, School Nurse, were on hand to demonstrate a telemedicine exam and answer questions. Telemedicine is the use of telecommunications and information technologies to connect patients and doctors regardless of their physical locations. Every school clinic is equipped with a telemedicine unit giving students and staff access to primary and specialty care without having to leave their campus. Banks and financial institutions across Georgia will be celebrating Georgia Peanut Bank Week, Oct. 18-25, 2014. Financial institutions in communities across the state are saluting peanut farmers’ contributions to the state and local economy during this weeklong event. The Georgia Peanut Commission, in cooperation with the Georgia Bankers Association, promotes Georgia’s official state crop by sponsoring Georgia Peanut Bank Week annually.
