Maria Williams of Fitzgerald is the first recipient of the “Charles Eames Travel Fund.” Williams is a student on the Coffee campus. The winner for September is Brittany Harrell, who is also from the Coffee campus of Wiregrass. Charles Eames, a retired librarian from Waycros, has found a unique way to help college students at Wiregrass Georgia Technical College at the Ben Hill-Irwin and Coffee campuses, as well as from other areas all across South Georgia. On October 2, Westside Elementary School hosted “Wild About Reading Night, Leaping Lexiles!” The evening’s festivities were kicked off in the gym by a wonderful performance by first grade students. Immediately following, assistant principal Amy Hughes shared critical information about reading instruction and Lexile levels with those in attendance. Afterwards, Tyler Lott and Chris Adams with Adams and Lott Reptiles shared various reptiles with students and talked about how they learn about the animals by reading informational texts. Cub Scout Pack 859 (First United Methodist Church – Aldersgate Sunday School Class) visited the Douglas Fire Department Station 3 on Monday, September 29. The Scouts were given a tour of the station, along with some fire safety tips by firefighter A.J. Dovers. They were shown all the clothing a firefighter must wear when fighting a fire and were also greeted by Sparky the Firedog. Over 60 Coffee High School students toured their way through the South Georgia State College Nursing program recently. CHS students were given hands-on demonstrations led by SGSC School of Nursing faculty and students. CHS Students had the opportunity to experience a situation ripped from the headlines with a simulated Ebola outbreak taking place in the Simulation Lab on SGSC’s campus.
