Thursday, Oct. 9 was a busy day at Eastside Elementary. The first Parent/Teacher Conference marked the end of the first nine weeks of school. Parents were able to meet with teachers to discuss their child’s progress and were given helpful study tips. Parents were also encouraged to participate in a survey, which helps to bring in extra funding for our schools and to donate blood to Oneblood. During the week of Fire Safety in Georgia, October 6-10, the Pre-K students at Eastside Elementary participated in many fire safety activities in order to become fire wise. The children learned the importance of having a family fire drill and establishing a safe meeting place near their home. The young Pre-K students even had homework to see if they had a working smoke alarm in their home and if so to find out where it is located. The General Election will be conducted Nov. 4 from 7 am – 7. All Election Day polling sites will be open as usual for Douglas, Ambrose, Bridgetown, Broxton, Nicholls, and West Green. The Elections Office, 224 W. Ashley St., Douglas, will be open for advance voting starting at 8:30 am, Monday, Oct. 13 and ending on Friday, Oct. 31 at 5 pm. Mrs. Benton and Mrs. Woodard’s third graders at Westside Elementary are having a blast kicking off their multiplication math unit. Students read the book One Hundred Hungry Ants written by Elinor J. Pinczes out loud for the first read. During the second read aloud, students worked in small groups in various locations of the room creating the story using manipulatives. The story is about 100 hungry ants that are marching toward a picnic. The littlest ant does not think they are going fast enough so he continues making them get into new groups. Maria Williams of Fitzgerald is the first recipient of the “Charles Eames Travel Fund.” Williams is a student on the Coffee campus. The winner for September is Brittany Harrell, who is also from the Coffee campus of Wiregrass. Charles Eames, a retired librarian from Waycros, has found a unique way to help college students at Wiregrass Georgia Technical College at the Ben Hill-Irwin and Coffee campuses, as well as from other areas all across South Georgia. It’s almost 3 a.m., and I can’t sleep…again. One of the side-effects of PTSD, I’m sure. I never really ever thought that I’d experience that. I mean, isn’t post traumatic stress disorder reserved for war vets and violent crime victims? Apparently not. For some reason, He speaks to me a lot at night. On October 2, Westside Elementary School hosted “Wild About Reading Night, Leaping Lexiles!” The evening’s festivities were kicked off in the gym by a wonderful performance by first grade students. Immediately following, assistant principal Amy Hughes shared critical information about reading instruction and Lexile levels with those in attendance. Afterwards, Tyler Lott and Chris Adams with Adams and Lott Reptiles shared various reptiles with students and talked about how they learn about the animals by reading informational texts.
